Al Jazeera Forum: UN Security Council must have Arab representation: Lula Monday, 14 March 2011 01:38

DOHA: The absence of an Arab country in the United Nations Security Council was questioned yesterday at the forum yesterday.

“How can we explain that the Arab countries don’t have at least one representative at the United Nations Security Council?” Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, former president of Brazil asked the audiences during his keynote speech.

“The multilateral bodies today need a democratic reform so that they can give a voice and a chance to all,” he said.

It was necessary to change this rationale of the world geopolitics and the rationale of the trade policies, says Da Silva.

“It does not suffice that we have democracy in our countries, it is necessary to prevail this democracy in the international relations and in the international bodies.”

He further explained that the world needs and could end up with social unfairness, and then economies would become stronger, when everybody has the same opportunity.

“I believe that the world is going towards new global governance, and the countries and the world organisations such as trade organisation, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank need to understand that we are moving towards democratic global governance,” Da Silva said.

While, referring to the socio-political changes happening in the Middle East he explained that it is very early to have the exact dimension of the events.

“It’s too early for us to have the exact dimension of what’s happening in the Middle East,” he said.

Da Silva also compared the past uprising in his own country of Brazil to the events in the Arab world and stressed the need for power change to strengthen democracy.

“Change in power is necessary so that we can guarantee the strengthening of democracy, and democracy can only be the winner,” he said.

He also expressed his solidarity to all of those in the Middle East and in any part of the world that are struggling for freedom, democracy and social fairness.
