DOHA: As part of its commitment to social responsibility and its continued support of the Qatar National Vision 2030, ExxonMobil provides internships and sponsorships to university students. ExxonMobil recruits students from various majors, including engineering, accounting, public affairs, business administration, finance and law.
The internship programme has also become an effective method of recruiting talented Qataris. Alex Dodds, President and General Manager of ExxonMobil Qatar Inc., said: “At ExxonMobil Qatar, we are hiring, training and developing Qataris for key engineering and managerial roles”.
Ernie Richter, Human Resources Manager, said that the success of the internship program is a “critical element of the Qatarization process”.
An internship typically lasts one month, with possibility for extension and even scholarship. The internship is mutually beneficial for both ExxonMobil and the students.
The company benefits from the innovative minds of its interns and gives the most promising ones the opportunity for future employment.
The students are able to experience the workplace firsthand in a professional and demanding environment. Richter expressed that the internships allow students to “contribute on meaningful projects and at the same time learn more about the energy sector”.
Khaled Al-Jufairi, a former intern in ExxonMobil’s summer internship programme, was offered a full time position in the Public Affairs department.
This summer eleven interns participated in the program. The students came from Qatar University, Georgetown University, Texas A&M and several other universities. .
The interns are given personalised projects, tailored to their fields of study and interest. They are required to successfully complete the project and present it to ExxonMobil management. The presentation is designed to evaluate the interns’ progression and allow them to gain the necessary traits for professional presentation.
Moreover, the students were required to attend educational seminars, the last of which was the career development workshop.
The workshops were designed to educate the students in career planning and provide them with the skills they need in order to advance in their respective careers.
In addition, the students experienced firsthand the energy sector when they visited the Ras Laffan Industrial City last Thursday.
