Deportation can be challenged in rights agencies

DOHA: The Ministry of Interior has said it does not take any unfair decision on deporting a person from the country.

A decision on deportation is always taken in public interest and the reason to repatriate a person is not made public and kept classified because it is based on exchange of information between two countries.

However, someone who feels that the decision to deport him or her has been taken in an unfair manner can approach the human rights committee at the Ministry of Interior and lodge his grievance, said Colonel Salem Saqr Al Meraikhi, Deputy Director of the Legal Affairs Department at the ministry.

Al Meraikhi was addressing a forum organised by the Faculty of Law at Qatar University recently. Present on the occasion was the dean of the faculty, Dr Hassan Al Sayed.

People can alternatively approach the National Human Rights Committee as well with their grievance against a deportation decision, said Al Meraikhi. However, he added that it was not obligatory for the ministry to favourably consider a request for revocation of a

deportation order.

The forum, jointly organised with the Association of American Judges and Lawyers, is an annual event.
