Qatar bans fish imports from Iran, Pakistan

doha • Qatar has imposed an indefinite ban on the import of all kinds of fish and seafood from Iran and Pakistan. The ban order comes in the wake of reports of high radiation detected in the imported fish and shrimps from Iran to Kuwait.

“The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture (MMAA) banned the importing of all types of fish, including prawns , from Iran and Pakistan, after Kuwait declared finding high rate of radiant pollution in the imported fish and shrimp from Iran to Kuwait”, official sources said.

After discovering high rate of radiation in the imported shrimps, Kuwait had given immediate alerts to the ministries of agriculture and health authorties in all the GCC nations. It had also advised the nations to ensure the safety of local seafood in each country, sources added.

Confirming the report on ban in Qatar, H E Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nazer al Thani, Director-General (Administration, Research and Agriculture Development) at MMAA told Al Sharq: “The Ministry has taken the samples of the shrimps and sent to the labs to check whether the shrimps in Qatar market are polluted or not. We are expecting the results today,” he said.
