DOHA: Three Korean films will be screened at the Qatar National Theatre from October 17 to October 19. The film festival is part of the Korean Embassy’s Korean-Arab Friendship Express Caravan, which promotes and develops intercultural relations between the region and South Korea.
The films 200 Pounds Beauty, which will be screened on October 17 at 7.30pm; Le Grand Chef to be screened on October 18 at 7.30pm; and Forever the Moment to be screened on October 19 also at 7.30pm, will all have Arabic subtitles and will be screened free of charge.
“These films reflect the lifestyle of Korea and a way to show this lifestyle to the Arab world… This is the second time we have had an event for the Korean-Arab Friendship Express Caravan but it is the first time we have done it through a film-showing,” said Mustafa Azmi Sadeq, translator at the Korean Embassy here. Sadez said the films are also being shown in other countries in the Gulf region.
The movie 200 Pounds Beauty is a 2006 comedy based on a Japanese manga, Kanna-San, Daiseikou Desu (Being Beautiful is Agonising)”by Yumiko Suzuki. The story tells the tale of an overweight girl who undergoes an extreme makeover and become a pop sensation.
Le Grand Chef is a 2007 movie based on a popular comic book. The film tells the story of two chefs competing for the title of heir to the last Royal Chef of the Joseon Dynasty.
Forever the Moment is a film which was released last year. It is a fictionalised account of the South Korean women’s handball team which competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics. The Korean title translates as “The Best Moment in Our Lives,” and it is believed to be the first film that revolves around the sport of handball.
The event is organized by the Korean Embassy in Doha, the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage of the State of Qatar, and the Korean-Arab Society.
