DOHA • The Qatar University and Al Jazeera Network yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of media and education.

The agreement was signed by QU President Dr Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad and Al Jazeera Network Director General Wadah Khanfar.

Al Jazeera will support Qatar University students in different fields and disciplines (engineering, science, computer, media) through a programme of practical studies and training courses, said a release yesterday.

It will assist the students in their preparations for the final projects, which can benefit the network - for example, setting up a website for Engineering and Sciences or preparing documentary films for Media students.

The MOU also mentions that the two sides will negotiate the possibility of establishing the Al Jazeera Professorial Chair in the Department of Media and Information Science at the university.

Al Jazeera will also supervise and oversee the establishment of a new media lab in QU, to help students acquire the latest technology and be trained on the latest in this field.

In addition, both sides will agree on a plan of cooperation in the fields of studies, research, and training programs. They will also agree on a plan of cooperation in organising conferences and seminars on media issues, aiming to increase the media awareness in the society.

A committee will be formed to follow the application of the terms of agreement and present a report every six months, said the release.
