Pittsburgh • H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) received an honorary doctorate from the University of Carnegie Mellon, USA, in Humane Letters.
Sheikha Mozah gave the keynote speech at the Carnegie Mellon 109th commencement on Sunday at the Gesling Stadium in the university campus.
Sheikha Mozah was recognised for her many engagements in education and social reforms in Qatar and has also for playing a major role in spearheading various national and international development projects.
In her address Sheikha Mozah focused on the common values shared by the Western and Arabic cultures, highlighting the fact that the ambitions and hopes of the Western youth are the same as the ambitions and hopes of the Arabic youth, urging the students not to accept their world today but to always question it.
Joining Sheikha Mozah on the commencement platform this year were five prestigious scholars who also received honorary degrees.
They are Jonathan Borofsky (1964) artist doctor of fine arts; Vartan Gregorian, the President of Carnegie Corporation of New York, doctor of humane letters; John L Hall (s 1956, 58, 62) from the joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics fellow, National Institute of Standards and Technology and 2005 Nobel Prize in physics recipient; Jeffrey A Romoff, the President of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, doctor of science and technology and Bud Yorkin (e 1948) a producer and director, doctor of fine arts.
