DOHA: There was plenty of support for both England and Brazil during yesterday’s international friendly at the Khalifa Stadium.

A packed Stadium with 50,000 fans enjoyed every minute of the match. Though the fans in Doha would have expected more goals with just one in 90 minutes, overall it was a thorough professional display by five-time world champions Brazil.

There were huge cheers when Real Madrid midfielder Kaka dribbled past a few English players and entered the penalty box.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, handed the captaincy armband for the first time in his 57th national appearance too received a rousing reception from his fans. Rooney will always remember Doha for his captaincy debut for the Three Lions.

These two were the brightest stars on the night. In terms of support in the stands, it was almost equal with plenty of yellow and white shirts.

Brazil, as they are known for, over the years, dominated the game yesterday as well. They created more chances and had more possession.

“I learnt a lot today. Brazil is a strong team in the world. They are good technically and strong physically,” admitted England manager Fabio Capello.

Just before the teams walked onto the pitch, the lights at the Stadium were put off as the fans waved illuminated sticks handed to them before entering the Stadium.

When both team’s players entered the arena, the crowd erupted in joy. There were plenty in the stands who were seen wearing Brazilian jerseys with Kaka’s name. With German goalkeeper Robert Enke’s tragic death a few days back, both teams and the entire Stadium paid their respects to the player by observing a minute’s silence.

After the match, Qatar Football Association’s (QFA) President, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani handed over mementoes to both teams’ coaches Capello and Dunga.

The Khalifa Stadium has witnessed several sporting events including the 2006 Asian Games which were a huge success. Now add to this high-profile football game and it was an evening to remember for Qatar’s spectators and those who made the trip to Doha only for this match.
