 | | Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al Mohammad Al Sabah visits Kuwaiti writer and publisher Zayed Al Zaid at Mubarak Hospital in Kuwait City yesterday. |
KUWAIT: The editor of a news website in Kuwait who has often criticised corruption in the Gulf state was wounded in an attack by an unidentified man, the website and a colleague said yesterday.
Zayed Al Zaid, editor-in-chief of Alaan (www.alaan.cc), was hit on the face with a metal object in the street after attending a seminar on transparency and corruption, the site said, showing photos of a bloodied Zaid after the incident late on Sunday.
“I don’t think this is a personal attack. I think this is an organised political crime,” said Dahem Al Qahtani, a journalist at the website.
Several members of Kuwait’s parliament condemned the attack and suggested Zaid was assaulted over his writings, which often focus on government contracts which media and some parliamentarians have suggested were corrupt.
Such attacks are rare in Kuwait, which has a vibrant media and political culture.
