ADDIS ABABA: A six-nation east African regional bloc yesterday urged global sanctions on Eritrea for backing Islamist rebels in neighbouring war-torn Somalia. “We urge the international community to go beyond words and act against all spoilers in the region,” Kipruto Arap Kirwa, a special envoy on Somalia for the Inter-governmental Authority for Development (IGAD), said. “Our council of ministers has made strong recommendations that there must be sanctions against individual entities and Eritrea who are aiding, financing and facilitating resources for the Shabab and other negative elements,” he said. IGAD groups six Horn of Africa countries: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.
