KARACHI • The Saddar Town police in this port city of Pakistan have arrested four local ‘characters’ of a film that was being shot in the city on slain American journalist Daniel Pearl who was killed in Karachi five years ago.

Police sources said that they picked up four security guards who were in police uniforms and were acting like police officials in front of the Sindh High Court.

A senior Saddar Town police officer said the filmmakers had not acquired permission from the police department. The Preedy Police have registered a case against Ali Mohammad, Amin, Mohammad Akram and Zahid Hussain. The police said they all belonged to Premier Security Company.

The case was registered under Section 170/171 of the Pakistan Penal Code regarding the use of the police uniform by unauthorised persons. Police sources said that the British Embassy has been informed of the arrests.

On July 13, Reuters reported from Los Angeles that Angelina Jolie would star as Pearl’s widow in the new movie to be produced by Brad Pitt’s company, according to distributor Paramount Vantage.

A Mighty Heart is adapted from Mariane Pearl’s memoir of the same name which details Pearl’s search for her husband, who was abducted and beheaded in Pakistan in early 2002. Jolie will portray Pearl.

“The film will focus on the deep collaboration between people around the world in search of Daniel in 2002,” Pitt told People magazine. “We hope the film can increase understanding between people of all faiths.”

Michael Winterbottom, famed for such war-based films as Welcome to Sarajevo and The Road to Guantanamo, will direct.

Pitt’s Plan B production company will make the movie with Revolution Films, and Paramount Vantage, which is the art-house arm of Viacom Inc’s Paramount Pictures, will distribute

BBC reported on July 14 that the film will examine his reasons for being in Pakistan, his abduction and his wife’s attempts to find him. “I am delighted that Angelina Jolie will be playing my role in the adaptation of my book,” said Pearl. “I deeply admire her work and what she is committed to.”

The actor’s production company is co-owned with his former wife, Jennifer Aniston.
