LONDON: GlaxoSmithKline’s swine flu vaccine Arepanrix has been approved for use by the World Health Organisation (WHO), paving the way for its distribution in developing countries. The vaccine—which is identical to Glaxo’s developed world treatment Pandemrix but is made in Canada rather than Germany—is the first H1N1 pandemic vaccine to be prequalified by the UN body, the British company said yesterday. Like Pandemrix, it contains a special additive or adjuvant that minimises the amount of active ingredient given with each shot. Earlier this month, Glaxo signed an agreement to donate 50 million doses of adjuvanted vaccine to the WHO for use in poor countries most in need.
