Doha • The Darinfo-sponsored three-day journalism workshop on "Government and Investigative Reporting" will begin at Al Sharq complex on D-Ring road tomorrow.

Representing various media and journalism institutes in Qatar, a total of over seventy journalists, journalism graduates and students will attend the workshop.

Darinfo, Dar Al Sharq Centre for Information and Studies and Training, is organizing the event in coordination with noted media expert Martha Steffens of University of Missouri, US.

Dar Al Sharq Printing, Publishing and Distribution Assistant General Manager Ibrahim Al Syed will open the three-day event at 5.30pm.

Yahya Alawad A Adam, Director, Darinfo, told The Peninsula that the event is being organized as part of Dar Al Sharq Corporation's future plans to equip journalists in Qatar to cover the upcoming Shurah elections in a transparent and democratic way.

"The three-day journalism workshop will give exposure to the participating journalists to the international standard of election coverage. Professor Martha will explain various facets of election coverage ranging from the run up to the post-election analysis", he said.

Brian Steffens, another media expert from the US will also address various sessions at the workshop.

Professor Martha has been editor of the San Francisco Examiner and worked at dailies like the Los Angeles Times and Minneapolis Star Tribune. She has been a visiting professor at Moscow State University and has lectured in more than 15 countries, including Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan.

Brian Steffens is executive director of the National Newspaper Association, a group of 2700 smaller daily newspapers in the United States. He is a former editor of Editor& Publisher magazine, and editor of Quill, the magazine for the Society of Professional Journalists. He has also worked for major newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times, Detroit News and Miami Herald.
