DOHA • The National Health Authority (NHA) has launched a public campaign in a renewed bid to effectively implement the anti-smoking law in Qatar.
The health authorities in the country have been facing criticism from concerned circles for their alleged laxity in implementing Law No: 20 of 2002 concerning the control of tobacco and its derivates.
The Authority has now started deploying inspectors with judicial powers to check violations of the law, especially smoking in public places. It has also issued posters and brochures to inform the public about the relevant articles of the law.
As per the law, smoking is banned in closed places like public means of transport, schools, education and training centres, universities, hospitals and medical centres and other educational and health establishments.
The ban also applies in ministries and other government bodies, public authorities and institutions, sports clubs, society centres, public places, inside lifts, cinemas and theatres.
Industrial establishments, shopping centres, restaurants and other outlets selling food to the public are also included in the ban.
The law has also banned sale of cigarettes or tobacco and its derivatives to those who are aged less than 18 years. Ignorance about the buyer's age will not be an excuse before the law and the seller is required to ensure the age of the customer.
It is also prohibited to sell cigarettes or tobacco or its derivatives within a distance of less than 500 metres from schools and other educational and training institutions.
Advertising for cigarettes or tobacco, or its derivatives, with the intention of promoting or encouraging smoking in any place or any way is also prohibited by the law.
