Hossa’s shoot-out goal wins it for Detroit

Calgary Flames’ defenceman Mark Giordano (bottom) is taken to the ice by Colorado Avalanche’s winger Ian Laperriere during a fight in the first period of their NHL game in Denver yesterday.

DETROIT: Marian Hossa scored the winning shoot-out goal after netting twice in regulation to help the Detroit Red Wings end a five-game winless streak with a 4-3 victory over the St Louis Blues yesterday.

Hossa’s decisive strike against Blues goalie Chris Mason came after both Detroit’s Jiri Hudler and St Louis’s Brad Boyes had found the net in the shootout.

We battled as hard as we could,” Hossa told reporters.

“Obviously some things did not work out as we liked, but the end result was we got two points. We finally broke up the losing streak and that’s huge.”

The right winger had earlier scored twice in the second period of regulation, his first giving the Stanley Cup champions a 2-1 lead and his second edging them ahead again at 3-2 five minutes later with his 26th tally of the season.

“The first one I surprised even myself,” Hossa said.

“The second one I tried to shoot from behind the defenseman and it worked out well.”

Barrett Jackman forced overtime with St Louis’s third power-play goal of the game, 11:58 into the third period.

The goal followed game misconduct and boarding penalties against Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja for hitting the Blues’ David Backes from behind. TJ Oshie and Patrik Berglund also had power-play scores for the lowly Blues (20-24-5), who sit bottom of the Western Conference.

Kirk Maltby collected Detroit’s opening goal 2:34 into the second period while Chris Osgood had 30 saves for the Central Division-leading Red Wings (32-11-7).

Mason made 13 saves for St Louis after replacing Manny Legace in the second period. Legace gave up all three of Detroit’s goals in regulation on only eight shots.

Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens suffered a blow on Monday when they announced that leading goal-scorer Robert Lang had surgery to repair a severed left Achilles tendon.

The 38-year-old center, who leads the club with 18 goals this season, is out indefinitely after having the procedure on Sunday.

Lang suffered the injury in the third period of Sunday’s 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins when he was checked into the boards by Stephane Yelle.

Lang scored Montreal’s only goal of the game before he was hurt. The Canadiens have lost five of their last six games.

Results: DETROIT 4, ST LOUIS 3 (SO); COLORADO 4, CALGARY 3; ANAHEIM 3, BUFFALO 2.
