Guatemala pulls candidate to support Qatar’s contender

The campaign of Qatar’s candidate for the post of Director General, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), H E Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, has gained ground with the withdraws of Guatemala’s candidate on September 28.
The Foreign Minister of Guatemala formally sent a letter of endorsement to Qatar’s candidate Dr Hamad Al Kawari confirming the withdraw of his country’s candidate. Election for the term 2017-2021, will take place during the 39th General Conference of Unesco, from October 30 to November 14, 2017 in Paris, France. Guatemala’s Juan Alfonso Fuentes Soria was the only candidate from the Western Hemisphere and was representing group of 3 or the Latin America group for the Post. The decision taken by the Government of Guatemala was due to the capacity and the expertise of the Qatari candidate H E Dr Hamad Al Kawari, a leading contender for the post of Director General. His platform is based on a stronger UNESCO with a focus on re-branding, financial rehabilitation, lobby to bring the US back to UNESCO and regional representation.

H E Dr Al Kawari expressed his thanks for the President and the government of Guatemala and assured them of the appreciation of the Qatari leadership for their support and expressed his willingness to work together for the strengthening the bilateral relationship and his understanding for the Unesco to play an active in Latin America and the Caribbean as DG of Unesco after the coming election in 9th of October 2017.
There are six enlisted Groups who come together to elect the Director General, Unesco. Guatemala which was the sole representative of Latin American and Caribbean Group has withdrawn its candidate in favour of
H E Dr Hamad Al Kawari – an impeccable sign of the gathering global support of the Qatari statesman.
