‘Trabantwelt’ 60th anniversary

Frank Hofmann, the founder of "Trabantwelt" mail order company, poses in a vintage East German-era Trabant 601s Deluxe car at the company's workshop on November 2, 2011 in Zwickau, eastern Germany. The iconic Trabant (nicknamed "trabi"), produced in East Germany from the late 1950s, celebrates its 60th anniversary in November 2017. The Trabant, an uncomfortable and ubiquitous East German vehicle with an unreliable two-stroke engine, became the overwhelming symbol of the collapse of the former Soviet Union when thousands of East Germans used the dodgy cars to escape to western Europe in 1989.
