Football giants Al Sadd bounced back from ‘Qatar Clasico’ defeat, producing an impressive display to beat Al Ahli 2-1 in their round 7 clash of the QNB Stars League (QSL) yesterday,
Algerian forward Baghdad Bounedjah (7) struck early in the first half for Al Sadd who saw their lead doubled by feared striker Hassan Al Haydos (18) at Khalifa Stadium. Al Ahli captain Meshal Abdulla reduced the deficit in 90th minute.
After stout defending in the first six minutes of the round 7 clash, Al Ahli backline let two goals in the next 12 minutes of play on home soil.
Striker Al Haydos - running in from the midfield - spotted Bounedjah on the left flank.
Al Haydos clipped the ball towards Bounedjah and the Algerian curled one past Al Ahli goalkeeper Yazan Naim with a left-footed drive that hit the left side of the net in the 7th minute.
In the 18th minute, Al Haydos doubled Al Sadd’s lead when he found the net from the edge of the Al Ahli box as U-23 goalkeeper Naim failed to stop the ball.
An error from an Al Ahli defender saw a long lob land neatly at Al Haydos’s feet.
The Qatar national team forward quickly drilled a low ball past goalkeeper Naim for his team’s second goal.
Barca legend and captain Xavi - who was rested for the game - warmly applauded Al Haydos’ effort.
In the 34th minute, Al Sadd’s Yasir Abubakar Essa outran two of Al Ahli’s defenders but his clip from close range slipped past the far goalpost with ‘keeper Naim completely beaten by the move.
A minute before the first-half whistle, Bounedjah found the gap among a row of four Al Ahli defenders but his shot from the edge of the box missed the goalpost narrowly.
Six minutes into the second half, Ah Ahli captain Meshal Abdulla charged into the Al Sadd box but misfired with only goalkeeper Saad Abdulla to beat.
Yesterday’s win was Al Sadd’s sixth of the season. Coached by Jesualdo Ferreira, Al Sadd last week lost to Michael Laudrup’s Al Rayyan 2-1 in the ‘Qatar Clasico’.
