New Al Thumama intersection partially open

DOHA: The new Al Thumama intersection on E-Ring Road is now partially open after its conversion from a roundabout to a signal-controlled intersection.
The intersection was opened to traffic on Sunday as part of the upgrade project on E-Ring Road and Najma Street, Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said yesterday.
Two newly-constructed lanes in each direction on Najma Street and E-Ring Road were opened to traffic, while the remaining work continues in both directions.
The fully developed intersection, which will include four lanes in each direction on E-ring Road and three lanes in each direction on Najma Street is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of this year.
The upgrade project aims to develop about a three-kilometre stretch of Najma Street, in addition to building two new signal-controlled intersections and developing about a 3.3km stretch of E-Ring Road.
The project also includes the development of another intersection at Oqba Bin Nafea Street and Najma Street.
It includes landscaping works, pedestrian and cyclists pathways, car parking, median islands and infrastructure utilities in the area.
Al Thumama Intersection is considered an important step in the upgrade project on E-Ring Road and Najma Street. Work started in the first quarter of last year by a local contracting company with a contract worth about QR240m. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
