Doha: Minister of Economy and Commerce H E Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani inaugurated a workshop yesterday, organised by the ministry at the University of Qatar in the field of financing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The Minister said that organising the workshop reflects the commitment to economic diversification, the goal of Qatar National Vision 2030. The State of Qatar realised early the dangers of relying on oil as a sole source of income as it was easily affected by foreign factors. This was proven right by the recent declines in the prices of oil and natural gas, he said.
Part of the state of Qatar’s efforts according to the Minister was bolstering the private sector. This was achieved by providing investment solutions to businesspeople, entrepreneurs and investors. One of the important projects was launching a logistics area in the south of Qatar, which is considered the biggest projects implemented in the country.
The ministry also offered smart electronic services to investors to facilitate the red tape procedures. Such services included issuing and renewing commercial registrations. The Minister noted that all these efforts have already yielded some tangible results.
The private sector has already become a main partner in growth. GDP growth for 2015 was registered at 6.1 percent, which is much higher than the World GDP growth of 2.8 percent. The non-oil sector has grown from representing 42 percent in 2005 to 50 percent in 2014, he added.
