DOHA: The Clinical Imaging Department at Hamad Medical Corporation’s Heart Hospital observed World Radiography Day, in association with Sidra Medical and Research Center, HMC’s Paediatric Emergency Centers and Neonatal Imaging Unit at Women’s Hospital, among others.
Radiographers, physicians, residents and other healthcare providers attended the event that aimed to build effective communication between all radiographers and raise awareness about radiology practice in Qatar.
Recent advances in radiology were shared by radiographers and others who work in the healthcare industry.
The day marks the discovery of X-radiation by German physicist Wilhelm Röentgen in 1895. He produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range that was known as X-rays or Röentgen rays, an achievement that earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
On World Radiography Day, radiographers and partners, such as radiotherapist and radiation protection providers, promote radiography as a career and demonstrate the field’s contribution to modern healthcare.
It also aims to create awareness about diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy. This year, ‘paediatric imaging’ was chosen as the main theme of the day to highlight the important role radiology plays in the detection, diagnosis and management of diseases affecting children and special treatment younger patients need.
Fatima Al Sulaiti, Chief Technologist  at the department and Chairperson, World Radiography Day events, said, “We are proud to have joined in the celebration of Röentgen, who is considered the father of diagnostic radiology, the medical speciality that uses imaging to diagnose diseases. We hope radiographers across Qatar have shared updates in the field by coming together during our symposium.”
Activities focusing on radiography were held for visitors to Heart Hospital, Al Khor Hospital and Rumailah Hospital.
These included a symposium and a gala dinner during which appreciation awards were presented to staff selected as best employees in their field. Long-serving staff were also honoured at each of the hospital.
