Bouchard starts with gutsy win in Qatar
Eugenie Bouchard of Canada returns the ball to Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia on the opening day of the Qatar Total Open at Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha yesterday. Bouchard won 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). 


DOHA: Rising Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard yesterday rallied from a set down to beat qualifier Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia on the opening day of the Qatar Total Open. 
Bouchard, who got a wild card entry into the seven-day Premier 5 event, won 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in 2 hours and 28 minutes. 
It was the first meeting on the WTA Tour for the two players.
In other matches yesterday, China’s Saisai Zheng, Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan, Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay, Russia’s Daria Kasatkina, Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko and Croatia’s Donna Vekic also advanced to the second round of the $2.5m event.
In today’s action, seeded players Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia will play their first matches at the Qatar Total Open.
Wozniakci will play Ana Konjuh of Croatia while Kuznetsova takes on Julia Goerges of Germany.  
Jankovic will face Jana Cepelova of Slovakia.
In another game today, Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland takes on Bethanie Mattek Sands of the  United States. 
The matches will be played on Centre Court, Court Number 1, Court Number 2, Court Number 3 and  Court Number 4. Matches today start at 3:30pm
The winner takes home $518,50.
The tournament, being staged at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, will end on February 27.
