Guatemala City: Former Guatemalan vice president Roxana Baldetti returned to jail Friday to await a possible trial on graft charges after spending more than two months in hospital for a bacteriological infection, the government said.
Baldetti resigned from office in May last year over a scandal in which she and other officials were alleged to have received bribes in return for alleviating customs duties on goods for certain companies.
Four months later, the burgeoning scandal brought down president Otto Perez, who has also been jailed. An election in October replaced him with Jimmy Morales, a TV comedian who ran on a pledge to stamp out corruption.
Baldetti was transferred Friday to a women's detention center to the north of the capital after completing treatment in a private medical facility for the infection, Interior Minister Francisco Rivas told reporters.
He said Baldetti would not be receiving any special privileges while awaiting word on whether she would be put on trial.
