DOHA: Qatari cuisine will be at the core of the second edition of Hospitality Qatar through the much-anticipated Salon Culinaire which will see more than 250 chefs compete in 17 categories.
Shining the spotlight on the distinct flavours of the country’s cuisine aims at promoting the authentic local fare regionally, according to Chef Baran Yucel (pictured), Chairman,  Qatar Culinary Professionals (QCP) association, which is co-organising the competition for the second consecutive year.
“We have added a few other categories different from last year’s edition, including Qatari Feast to promote Qatari food in the region,” Yucel told The Peninsula on the sidelines of the press conference to announce the launch of Hospitality Qatar 2016 at Intercontinental Doha-The City yesterday.
“This is the reason why we will invite four celebrity French chefs to combine international and Qatari food elements to attract the wider community,” he explained.
More than 250 chefs from five-, four- and three-star hotels and restaurants have confirmed participation in the competition in various categories, including  ice carving; vegetable carving; mezza; chocolate showpiece; novelty cake; five course set menu; and mocktail competition, among others.
“Aside from Qatari Feast, other features of Salon Culinaire include vegetable carving; ice carving; and mezza, which will encourage young chefs to improve skills. It is a great platform for chefs to show skills and uncover hidden talents,” said Yucel.
With the success of the previous editions, he believes it is possible for the culinary competition to go international in the future. 
“In the coming years, maybe, we can jump into the international level, however we are aiming at local chefs who work in Qatar now. Salon Culinaire is a national competition,’ he said.
Salon Culinaire will be a concurrent event which will run daily at Hospitality Qatar 2016 from October 18 to 20 from 3pm to 9pm at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre. Registration is free.
