Quote of the day
Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act. Our thoughts should be with them and their families.Franco-Tunisian musician Smadj to perform on Feb 10 Thursday, 02 February 2012 00:33

Renowned Franco-Tunisian musician Smadj (pictured) will transport music lovers from Europe to the Middle East in his ‘SOS Tour’ concert on February 10, 8pm at the Qatar National Theatre.
Organised by the Institut Français du Qatar in partnership with the embassies of Tunisia and Hellenic Republic, the concert offers a dub/trip-hop feeling which will lazily transport audiences from Europe to the Middle East with a festive stop-over on the Bosporus shores.
Smadj’s SOS is a joyful yet laidback blend of Arabic and European musical feelings; a magic mix of electronic music with gypsy, jazz and oriental sounds.
A product of the Parisian and Turkish dance scene Smadj’s roots crisscross several continents: North Africa through his Tunisian forefathers and Europe through his childhood in France. He forged his musical education by exploring the musical resources of these two poles.
Today he masters the oud as well as the electro sound mixes and ends up with multicultural opuses where continents meet. Drawn to and inspired by Istanbul, he has ended up settling there and meeting his peers, the Turc Savas Zurnaci and the Greek Osman Orhan. Orhan Osman is the juggling master of bouzouki, guitars, banjo or other string instruments. Alongside him, Eric Gaulthier, in the steps of Savas, is clarinetist, some sort of a wizard of gipsy musical getaways. All together they explore furrowed melodies made of contemporary and numerical rhythms, as well as traditional melodies and warm atmosphere.
