QU ends summer activities Tuesday, 03 August 2010 04:14

Summer activities at the University of Qatar came to an end last week with a six-hour voyage to Al Sanbouk where participants had gathered and later headed to one of Doha’s islands.

The 3rd week of the Summer programme included an educational field trip to the Museum of Islamic Art, a cultural beacon summarising 1400 years of history with 800 rare pieces of ancient art.

The programme also included “Our Summer Health And Fitness,” which was organised by the Department of Student Activities at the University of Qatar.

It also included a first aid course, which has seen the participation of a very large number of students from Qatar University, in cooperation with the nation‘s security.

The first aid course began with the screening of a film about Qatar’s security forces, their importance, and what they do to maintain order and protect people.

This was followed by a presentation by Captain Khamis Al Merikhy who talked about the critical importance of first aid.

He called for enlisting first aid tips in school curricula to make students familiar, so that it can be useful particularly during emergencies.

The presentation also included an autopsy of the human body's veins, arteries, muscles, joints, and skeleton. The autopsy proved beneficial to participants who needed to understand the composition of the human body before they learned how to deal with it in case of emergency.

The course included interesting topics, such as breathing, wounds, bleeding, burns, and fractures. Lectures started with a simplified definition of the subject. This subject was later linked to the human body, which in turn led to the first-aid methods for each case.

Speaking at the end of the activities, Shams El Swedy, a university professor who supervised ‘Our Health and Fitness Programme,’ said the Department of Student Activities sought to turn the leisure of the students and their energies into something useful.

“The Department also seeks to provide an opportunity for the outside community by putting it on the track of study and training,” she said.
