Bird awareness in classrooms Tuesday, 03 August 2010 04:15
The Director of the Birds of Qatar Project, Sadiq Awad Bashir, announced last week the launch of a new project in the nation’s schools with the aim of spreading environmental awareness in classrooms.
Called ‘My Country Birds’, the new project will start getting implemented as of the next academic year under the umbrella of the Birds of Qatar Project.
Bashir said the project would seek to develop appropriate plans to spread environmental awareness among youngsters across the nation.
“The project aims to identify local birds and their importance in the Qatari environment,” Bashir said. “It’ll also seek to instil the values of love and respect for these beautiful creatures in the minds of these youngsters. They must come to recognise the importance of these birds for the environment,” he added.
Bashir pointed out that the project would follow several mechanisms to achieve its goals of changing students’ behaviour towards birds by providing them with practical and theoretical training in this regard.
“We also aim to attract birds for breeding through the project by designing wooden boxes to be placed inside Qatari schools,” Bashir said.
He said the birds will be given for good so that children could get acquainted with the best way of treating them.
He added that the boxes would be installed on tree branches at other places inside the schools.
“Successful schools will be rewarded at the end of the programme,” he said.
