Thiruvananthapu ram: A local TV channel has reported that former Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan’s son-in-law P V Srinijan, who did not have any land asset four years ago, is now worth a fortune.
Srinijan, a member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), had unsuccessfully contested as a Congress candidate in the Assembly elections from the SC reserved constituency of Narakkal in Ernakulam in 2006. He was also a vice-president of the State Youth Congress.
According to land registration documents cited by Asianet TV channel, Sreenijan purchased 2.5 acres of riverfront property for `14 lakh in Thrissur in 2007.
People in the locality claimed that the market rate for one cent (one-hundredth of an acre) of land in the area now is `2 lakhs. The channel showed footage of a resort under construction on the riverfront property.
Again in 2009, Srinijan and wife, K B Sony, the daughter of Balakrishnan, jointly purchased 30 cents at Elamakkara in the heart of Kochi, paying `1 lakh a cent.
In the local market, the going rate is `8 lakh per cent.
Last year, another 15 cents of adjacent property was purchased in the name of Srinijan’s mother, where a bungalow is coming up, the channel reported.
A Toyota Corolla car was purchased in Ms Sony’s name in 2007 and a flat at Edapally in the city.
According to the channel, Sreenijan’s IT returns in 2009 showed his annual income to be `25 lakh and that of his wife, `15 lakh.
The source of income was professional consultation.
It could be that he and wife had other sources of income but on record the IT returns do not justify that.
Efforts to contact Srinijan on the mobile phone proved futile as there was no response but a romantic ringtone.
