New Delhi: Abandoned at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, two-year-old battered baby Falak continued to be critical yesterday, a doctor said. She is still on ventilator.“The lung infection has reduced as the antibiotics have shown some effect. She is critical,” M C Misra, chief of the AIIMS Trauma Centre said. The baby is being fed through a tube as she battles against chest, brain, and blood infection.

“Our main concern is septicemia (blood infection). We are monitoring her condition minute by minute and it’s important to see how she does in the next 48 hours,” Misra added. Septicemia is bacteria in the blood that often occurs with severe infections in the body. The toddler was left by a teenaged girl at the hospital on January 18 with multiple injuries, including a fractured skull, human bite marks on her tiny frame and a clot on the right side of her brain. The baby has also shown marginal improvement in brain infection.

“The culture report is also out. We have seen that the bacterial infection is sensitive to the antibiotics we were giving. So we would like to be frank in saying that if her condition has not improved, it hasn’t even gone down,” Misra said.

Meanwhile, a woman has been arrested for forcing into prostitution the 14-year-old girl who brought battered baby Falak to hospital, police said. This is the fourth arrest in the case. The woman has been identified as Arti, the associate of another arrested woman Pooja.

Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of three people - Sandeep, his wife Pooja and Jitendra Kumar Gupta, the teenager’s father who used to physically assault her.

The girl got the baby from Rajkumar, the key accused in the case who is on the run. According to police, the juvenile girl was taken to Etah in Uttar Pradesh by her father’s acquaintance Pooja, who forced her to marry an old man. Upon refusing, the girl was repeatedly raped by Sandeep.    IANS
