Message to all guardians

The guardian is one of the most important elements required for the success of the educational process. The absence of that role either results in the loss of all efforts being made or at least in not achieving the desired results. Due to the importance of this role, the development of education system in Qatar focuses on the participation of parents through the establishment of the Board of Trustees as an active participant in the control, direction, and guidance of schools.

In fact, we educators suffer from the absence of the parents’ role as a partner with us in the education of children. This absence of participation weakens the efforts being made by the schools as they are one dimensional and thus their influence and impact is less than we hope to achieve. Oftentimes, guardians only come to the school when a problem occurs and amicable visits with the aim to keep track of the academic progress of their children are completely non-existent despite their importance in the process of successful learning. For that reason, educators call for the continuous, constructive, and proactive engagement of guardians that is not merely reactive.

Through this article, I wish to convey a message to every parent: if your child is the most valuable part of your life, this child needs some care and attention from you. Your child’s academic success is no less important than their need for adequate shelter, clothing, and food because excellence is your son’s and daughter’s gateway to the future. Do not simply think that the teacher or the school will complete that role and that you, as a parent, are not related to the level of your child’s progress in education. Perhaps your excuse is that you are busy with your occupation and life’s many worries.

Fathers, do not deprive your children’s education from your time, thinking that this role is only limited to their mother, or that the level of the curriculum is much higher than that of the level of parent’s educations, or that the child does not need help from parents. The relationship between the school and the family is a cooperative relationship and a participatory process. A student does not come to school as a blank page but equipped with knowledge, values, and concepts that are supplied by the family. The school’s role is to reinforce the correct values, developing their foundation, amending errors, and teaching the student new knowledge. This relationship must be an on-going one as what a school cannot complete, the parents will guarantee its completion. The goal remains, in the end, to bring students to succeed and excel. Parents’ participation at their children’s schools will have the greatest impact on a sound upbringing, benefitting the children in a prosperous future as active members in their community.

Therefore, I advise you, dear parents, to work while you are at home toward helping your children in their studies, promoting the positive aspects of their personalities, trying to listen to them, and sharing their personal troubles. It is not a shame to come down to the mental level of your children however their ages and trying to guide them. There is also no harm in getting them out of the atmospheres of the home and school for the purposes of family entertainment from time to time. It is important to share time and play games so as to get closer to your children and use the style of persuasion to demonstrate the positive and negative consequences of desirable and unwanted behavior.

Dear parents, please know that you are a partner of the teacher and the school in educating, guiding, counseling, and raising your children. Your visits and participation to schools will consolidate the bonds of trust between home and the school. Through consultation with teachers, students’ behaviour is modified and they are placed on the fast track to a bright future in academics, potential careers, and life. This is what we all strive for as parents and educators.

Rumours a threat to social stability

During the past week, I followed what was published about the cheetah sighting in the north and I was expecting it to be just a rumour. Sure enough, it has already been confirmed as such by the Ministry of Interior in a statement published in newspapers. The Ministry states that this report was not true, pointing out that it received a tip off on seeing an animal from one of the types of panthers known as cheetah -- in the North Security Department’s area of jurisdiction. The Department initiated its procedures in dealing with any types of emergencies related to security within that region. The statement also noted that after receiving several calls from the public claiming to have sighted the animal in different areas, the Ministry of Interior’s departments in those respective jurisdictions moved swiftly but the police and various other agencies could not detect any such animal. Further, the Ministry revealed that some of the communications it received were malicious and it took the necessary measures to address them.

The ministry appealed to all citizens and residents not to pay any attention to rumours and gossip-driven conversations or contribute to transferring unreliable information which only serves to spread terror and drive fear into the hearts of people.

In fact, before I address the impact of such rumours on the community, I must first praise the efforts of the Ministry of Interior in dealing with the greater interest of the public in order to achieve security and safety for all who live in this country. For this I thank them as a Qatari citizen, and at the same time, I would like to say to the person/s who launched this campaign of terror to take up the responsibility; as rumors are far more dangerous than lethal weapons and are devastating to communities and people. Do not forget how many rumours have agonized innocent people, how much gossip has been the source of crimes, and how rumours have broken numerous relationships and friendships.

It is no secret that rumours are a social phenomenon that causes great damage to any society. This is ever true in light of the widespread use of modern means of communication, especially the Blackberry, which is the latest of all communication devices in the world and has managed to house various means of online communication in a single device. Within one device, it is possible to make a telephone call, employ all of the functions of e-mail service, access social networking and chatting programs, and access the Internet.

Through this article, I am calling on all institutions of society to work together on diagnosing this serious phenomenon and work together to find solutions and remedies to the problem. Through a unified approach, the problem of rumours can be eradicated, its offenders warned, and the causes and motives behind such behaviours can be diminished so that they do not threaten the security and stability of society. I also advice all individuals to verify fact from fiction before proceeding to spread information. There is not a day that goes by that rumors aren’t spread either intentionally or unintentionally but we must all bear our share of the responsibility in carefully disseminating information that can be harmful to society.

Scientific research is a need, not luxury

A reality that is not lost on anyone is that scientific research is no longer an academic luxury but has become an engine for the new global educational system. Now, countries all over the world are racing toward reaching the highest possible degree of technical knowledge, which will ensure the comfort and well-being of their people. All the same, the importance of scientific research to open the doors to creativity, art, and excellence among individuals and peoples in different communities is indisputable and common across cultures. Scientific research works within the bounds of heritage, ideas, and previously defined themes in conducting a scientifically accurate investigation, which can be developed to gain access to new discoveries and innovations. As such, scientific research allows for a new understanding of the past, new start in the present, and a forward-looking vision for the future.

There is no doubt that the recent signature of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Education Commission of the Supreme Council of Education and the Qatari Fund for the Development of Scientific is in support of scientific research activities in independent schools. This will contribute to building a generation that is capable of taking responsibility and leading the country to more prosperity and progress. It will also serve to disseminate a culture of research at an early educational stage, granting the opportunity to undertake research assignments to all students, whether in scientific fields, or for finding solutions to social problems, or traffic issues, amongst others. Scientific research will arm students with many skills that will weigh in on their identity.

Training students to follow the methods of scientific research and development for information gathering, classification, and analysis will enable them to acquire the skills of critical analysis and thinking creativity, reasoning, and reaching scientific conclusions. Students will have the ability to solve and problems they face either at the present time or in the future, which will contribute to the preparation of active citizens that are able to effectively contribute and take responsibilities in any organisation in the country. As the future generation in Qatar, they will have the ability to carry out proper planning for the future and find solutions to social issues according to scientific methods for proper research rather than taking random decisions that are not based on methodological grounds, which could cost institutions and the state priceless losses. For those reasons, I believe that the deployment of a research culture among our students is the real investment for building the future.

Therefore, we as educators have a huge responsibility to give the opportunity to all students in our independent schools for the implementation of diverse research. We are also responsible for encouraging creativity, discovering talents, and providing nurture to students on the grounds that young researchers today are tomorrow’s scientists. Through supporting them, regardless of what kind of support, educators will contribute to preparing the future leaders. This is our duty because children form Qatar’s human capital, which is the most important component in the country’s sustainable development in order to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030).

Qatar’s increasing role in the global community

As a Qatari citizen and Arab, Qatar’s prominent and interesting role at the present session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), the largest gathering of world leaders, brought me distinct pride. Qatar’s role in resolving regional conflicts, efforts toward supporting international peace and security, and provision of creative initiatives to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) garnered the focus and attention of international media. The last of these initiatives that Qatar launched in the UN was to build an alliance aimed at strengthening food security. This success reflects important implications because it stems from the national leadership’s vision, which continues to play an exemplary role achieving remarkable success in helping various parties resolve intractable crises such as the Lebanese crisis, war in Yemen, Darfur, and other issues.

H H the Emir’s speech in front of world leaders at the sixty-fifth session of the General Assembly of the UN was a historic testimony reflecting an integrated, structured political vision at domestic, regional and international levels. Such was evident from the clarity of ideas and positions put forward by H H the Emir. Particularly, I was struck by H H the Emir’s emphasis in his speech to the General Assembly that Arab countries will not accept the peace that Israel wants to impose according to its whims and outside international legitimacy. A just peace in this context means the need to ensure the rights of the Palestinian people, the establishment of a Palestinian state, and Jerusalem as its capital, which confirms the strength of Qatar’s position in support of the Palestinian people’s rights and its vital role as an actor in the Arab and international community.

Qatar’s increasing presence abroad as witnessed in global summits at all levels reaffirms the success of the wise direction of Qatar’s leadership, which has led to country’s growing role on regional and international levels. Such is displayed in Qatar’s benevolent, tireless, and fruitful efforts to resolve conflicts in the region from Lebanon to Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia, along with supporting the Palestinian cause, and the humanitarian campaign to lift the unjust siege on the Gaza Strip, and other countless issues.

H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al-Missned’s address to the high-level roundtable meeting on the key role of education in the MDG placed strong emphasis on the need for universal access to quality education because it is the basis for the future. We must protect students, schools, and teachers as we must protect our civilisation.

Undoubtedly, Qatar’s global role grows day by day since its leadership successfully built a modern legislative state guaranteeing citizens’ freedom and promoting paths to comprehensive reform, led by H H the Emir, to place Qataris at the forefront of priorities.

Kindness of Greeks defies struggling economy

When I was thinking of where to tour with my family during summer vacation, several different countries crowded my thoughts. However, my selection was Greece as it is infamous for its striking beauty, calming nature, and unparalleled ancient history, which have created a notorious legacy. In Greece, tourism is unforgettable thanks to the juxtaposition of ancient monuments as a backdrop for aspects of modern city life. In fact, the golden sunshine and soothing sea made Greece a perfect destination for my family and me to unwind and relax from the fatigue of work, and spend memorable quality time together.

Researching this country was particularly essential since it was my first visit. Doing so, I came upon some unpleasant news due to the financial crisis in Greece, and the extent to which the economy there has deteriorated. The situation sounded deplorable, especially since crises such as these are known for transforming into breeding grounds for crimes. Suddenly, a tourism trip to this beautiful country was surrounded by many risks, which competed with my desire to spend time with my family exploring the distinct Greek civilization. All of these thoughts battling in my mind resulted in some hesitation, especially the more I read local and international news agencies’ reports on the implications of the deterioration of the Greek economy. After some reluctance, it did not take long before I reached the decision to travel to Greece with the companionship of a friend for a journey of discovery in order to spare my family any trouble and avoid potential risks.

Indeed, I traveled to Greece, the country that boasts spectacular weather conditions, variety of restaurants, hotels, and resorts catering to tourists. The country is infamous for its territories, islands, and cities, which offer all the amenities anyone could ask for. Its mountains are densely covered with pine, oak, and olive trees, waterfalls, and well-known sandy beaches, drawing a portrait of beautiful natural scenery. What surprised my friend and I about the concerns we previously held was that the worries were lost from the first moment of our arrival at Athens’ airport.

We found Greek people to be extremely friendly, and sincerely working as hard as they could to resist the effects of the economic crisis and the recession in a fun spirit, and understanding of the logic surrounding the nature of the crisis. I was impressed by the way the people were challenging their economic circumstances so I focused on speaking with a number of Greeks of different walks of life in order to learn more about how they face of the crisis on an individual level. I found that people’s complaints were mainly on the cost of living and working longer hours than before the crisis. It was clear that the social relationships among the people are strong, everyone is working to address the financial burdens of life, and sons are helping their fathers.

One of the people I spoke to told me with an inspirationally brave character, “yes, we are experiencing a real crisis but the family remains our source of strength during these difficult circumstances”, adding that, “everyone has sought to reduce the impact of the crisis upon others”. That statement sums up my impression that pure materialism has not abolished the humanitarian and social aspects of the hard-working people of this ancient civilization.

Fortunately, the trip was wonderful and we enjoyed visits to exciting tourist destinations in every region and corner of Greece. The nation’s renowned history and civilization surrounded us everywhere we went, and we felt in a safe family environment. From the moment I arrived to this country to my departure, I did not see or hear about a single robbery attempt, scam, or brawl. Something also worth noting is that prices were very convenient and there was no exaggeration. My experience makes me confident that the spirit of the ancient Greek civilization is still deep-rooted in the hearts of its people. Therefore, the Greeks will be able to overcome all of the odds, and I resolve for my second visit to this beautiful country to be in the companionship of my family.
