HH the Emir wants Qatar on top of transparency list: HE Al Attiyah Tuesday, 03 January 2012 13:05

DOHA: The establishment of an anti-corruption watchdog is in accord with the aspiration of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to make the State of Qatar as one of the most transparent countries in the world.

The target now said HE Abdullan bun Hamad Al Attiyah who chairs the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority is to make the country in the top 10 in terms of transparency worldwide.

The international organization Transparency International (TI) ranks nations annually in terms of transparency index as part of its anti-corruption drive worldwide. Qatar ranked 22 in the Corruption Index in of TI in 2011.

At 22, Qatar now ranks first among the Middle Eastern countries in terms of transparency and is keen to rid its systems of practices that hinder transparency.

HE Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah has called on the media not to buckle under pressure when pursuing alleged cases of irregularities against any entity howsoever influential.

"The media should be strong and should not give in when an entity against which it is writing with regard to alleged irregularities threatens to withdraw advertisement support," HE Al Attiyah said.
