The Egyptians and the Persians first used carrier pigeons 3,000 years ago and they were used as late as this century in India to deliver messages. Now they are mostly used for racing. In the sport, speeds of up to 177 kmph have been observed by top racers.
An auction was held here on Thursday night for Homing (or carrier) pigeons imported from England at the Qatar Society for Homing Pigeon. These birds will be used for breeding and races in Qatar and the rest of GCC from November to March.
The top bid in the auction was QR 3,000. The Peninsula
