Qatar Hockey Cup got off to a flying start Tuesday, 24 January 2012 00:00

Doha: The first Qatar Hockey Cup organised by Qatar Hockey Federation (QHF) got off to a flying start at the Rayyan Hockey Stadium.

In the first match Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC) beat Second Division champions Doha Hockey Club-1 by four goals to three.

MIC were all fired up as they have been reinforced by a few new players for this tournament.

Thierry Bunning put DHC-1 ahead in the eight minute but MIC controlled the game for the next quarter of an hour to score three vital goals through Muhmaed Ehsaan (two goals) and Noor Hussain.

However in the second half DHC-1 fought back to equalise through Christian Last and Thierry.

Captain Muhamed Ajmal scored the winning goal to put MIC ahead in the 60th. DHC-1 tried desperately for an equaliser but Farhan in the MIC goal was outstanding. MIC will now meet QHF Genext XI in the semi-final on February 3.

In the other match, United Hockey Qatar (UHQ) played skillful hockey to outclass DHC-2.

UHQ controlled the match and only a few good saves by stand in goal keeper Vik saved DHC from a bigger defeat.

Shaun opened the scoring for UHQ. Anstonson scored the second while Conway Sinclair scored a brilliant field goal. UHQ take on Al Fowriya Gateway in the other semi-final.

QHF will be hosting the Elzoomi Hockey Club from Sudan on January 28 and 29 for two friendlies. The first will be against the QHF-XI and the second against the QHF Under-21 team.  DHC are organizing a one-day six-a-side tournament from 8am this Friday at the Rayyan grounds. Apart from the Sudanese team, teams from Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE and Qatar will fight it out for top honors.
