Mesaieed Oil & Gas Cricket Tournament gets under way Tuesday, 31 January 2012 00:21

Doha: The first Mesaieed Oil & Gas Cricket Cup Tournament 2011 organised by Mesaieed Industrial City was inaugurated at the Cricket ground of the newly built Mesaieed Sports Complex by Maliq Omer Al Dafea, Manager, Municipal and Facilities Services Department recently.

In his opening speech Maliq welcomed the gathering of about 800 spectators comprising of several dignitaries, contractors, families and children.

“Cricket is a passion here and I have no doubt that this event provides a preview of the great cricketers and the standard of cricket will certainly be high during the tournament. We appreciate the interest of the Mesaieed Community and aim to promote the game of cricket here,” he sadi.

Eighteen teams from all Businesses and Joint Venture Companies in Mesaieed have registered for the maiden Mesaieed Oil & Gas tournament.

The teams are: QP-MIC, QP-Refinery, QP-Finance, QP-IT, QP-Contracts, QP-Gas Ops, QP-CT, QP-Dukhan, QP-RLC, Ras Gas, Qapco, Qafco, Qatar Steel, Q-Chem, QALCO, Qatalum, Seef Limited and Amwaj.

Thirty-nine matches will be played over the next 35 days, where cricket fans can expect several weeks of pulsating softball cricket action. More games are scheduled on weekends to give cricket lovers a full day of cricketing magic.

MIC’s future plan is to conduct several tournaments for other sports including football, basketball, rugby, badminton and tennis to further provide all Industries and community residents with more options of entertainment to promote Mesaieed as a better place to live and work.

Ziyad Ghazi Al Zabet, Manager, Business & Investors, Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary, QALCO Director of Operations, other dignitaries and all MIC organising committee members were present during the function.

The tournament is scheduled to continue till February 23 and prize distribution will be held during the closing ceremony on the same day.
