DOHA: Qatar Meat and Livestock Company (Mawashi) will increase imports of meat and livestock to address the soaring demand during Ramadan.
The demand for meat goes up during Ramadan, since it is an essential item for many Ramadan delicacies. “We are committed to ensuring enough supplies and maintain prices according directions from to the Ministry of Business and Trade. We will be importing additional quantities of meat and livestock from various countries,” said Mawashi officials.
Some 100,000 sheep (60,000 Australian and 40,000 Syrian) will be sold as live or slaughtered during the month. Same quantities will be imported from other countries. The price for Australian meat at Mawashi is QR14.50 per kg and that of the Syrian sheep is QR42.
To meet the expected demands during the holy month, the company has doubled the size of cattle sheds and stables. The company will also provide increased quantity of frozen meat from India, Pakistan, Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Brazil.
The quantity of chicken and eggs will be doubled to meet the needs. Major quantities will be imported from Brazil and Uruguay due to the high quality.
“During the month, we will also increase the safety and hygiene at Mawashi abattoir. We have six distribution centres to ensure that fresh and frozen meat is available for consumers through out the country,” said Dr Dafallah Al Hassan, Head of Production, Mawashi.
