DOHA: Al Jazeera English is in contention for the International Emmy Award for News and Current Affairs for the third consecutive year. The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the prestigious award in New York recently.
The Qatar-based channel was nominated in the News category for its coverage of the Gaza war.
The eight nominees in the News and Current Affairs categories span seven countries or territories apart from Qatar — Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Russia and the United Kingdom.
“The 2010 International Emmy Award Nominees for News and Current Affairs offer a fascinating window into the human drama constantly unfolding around the world in conflict zones, politics or even daily life,” said Bruce L Paisner, President and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. “We congratulate them for their outstanding achievements in television reporting.”
Al Jazeera English had journalists on both sides of the border during the 22-day Israeli offensive in Gaza, which began on December 26, 2008 and ended on January 17, 2009. The submitted coverage follows the start of a ground offensive in the territory on January 5, 2009.
Other channels nominated in the News category are UK’s Sky News for its coverage ‘Pakistan — Terror’s Front Line’; RT channel (Russia) — News: Extended News Coverage on Obama’s visit to Russia; and TV Globo (Brazil) — Jornal Nacional: Blackout in Brazil.
