The Peninsula joins Pakistan flood aid drive Sunday, 22 August 2010 05:20

DOHA: The Peninsula and Al Sharq have tied up with Qatar Charity to launch a drive to support flood victims in Pakistan. Donations will be received at all offices of Qatar Charity in the country beginning today.

Qatar Charity, a leading charitable body in the country, has been making arrangements to send 80 tonnes of emergency aid worth QR2.2m to the Lahore and Islamabad airports, in collaboration with Qatar Airways.

Abdullah bin Hussain Al Namah, Deputy Director of Qatar Charity, said yesterday that a shipment with 40 tonnes of aid will reach Lahore international airport soon. More shipment will be sent by air at the end of this week.

The shipment contains huge amounts of canned meat, tents, beds and blankets, kitchen tools, mosquito nets, cleaning material, stoves, lamps and portable toilets.

Qatar Charity was one of the first voluntary groups to start relief activities in the flood-hit areas of Pakistan. It is operating through its main office in Islamabad and its branches in other areas.

The organisation is working in collaboration with reputable international groups for disbursing the aid.

Nationals and residents have been urged to support the charity drive. A hotline service is also available during the campaign. The telephone number is: 44667711.

Qatar, with the help of charitable organisations in the country, has raised funds worth $8m to support the flood victims in Pakistan, Nasser bin Abdul Aziz Al Nasr, Qatar’s permanent representative in the UN, has said.

Meanwhile, RAF has signed an agreement with Qatar Red Crescent to send aid worth QR1.4m to Pakistan to provide medical and other support to 3,000 families. RAF has allocated an additional QR3.5m to support the flood victims.
