DOHA: In a gesture to promote organ transplantation in Qatar, H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, who is also vice president of the Supreme Council of Health (SCH), will patronise a special event to honour organ donors that will take place at the SCH premises tomorrow evening.
Twenty seven donors, 16 of them Qataris will be honoured at the ceremony in the presence of Sheikha Mozah and other top dignitaries, it was revealed yesterday. “This is a unique event patronised by Sheikha Mozah that can play a major role in raising public awareness about organ donation in Qatar. We used to organise events to honour donors every year, but this is the first time such an event is held in this scale,” Dr Riadh Fadhil, senior consultant and Transplant surgeon at the Hamad Medical Corporation told this newspaper yesterday.
He was speaking on the sidelines of an event at the HMC Education Center yesterday held in preparation for Saturday’s ceremony. Several donors and recipients of organs were present at the event, along with doctors and surgeons from the transplant unit at HMC.
“The celebration comes as a gesture of support and appreciation for those who donate organs during their lives, and the families of those who donate after death, in an unprecedented event in our region,” said a SCH statement.
The SCH and the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have been working together in a national campaign to encourage organ donation. The campaign aims at eliminating the long list of those waiting for organ transplant at HMC and to protect patients from falling victims to immoral practices related to organ transplant outside Qatar.
