GCC security officials show interest in Qatar’s iris scan proposal Saturday, 27 November 2010 01:36

DOHA: A GCC workgroup for electronic exchange of fingerprints and security information shared their experience and expertise on how they effectively carried out their tasks to secure the Gulf region from risks during the two-day meeting here early this week.

The discussions at the meetings became interesting when Qatar presented iris scans for foreigners being deported and face prints and DNA for future considerations that will help secure GCC in combating different kinds of crimes.

Col Nasser Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Director of Criminal Evidences and Information Department (CEID) of the Ministry of Interior, said the exchange of iris scans among neighbouring Gulf countries would help them decide on whether or not to allow a person deported from another country in the same region.

Delegates from the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain attended the two-day meeting here and later toured around various sections of the CEID. Maj Rashid Ali Al Murri, CEID information head, gave an explanation before guests on the missions of each section of the department and the role played by the CEID in serving the justice as well as the services offered to the citizens and expatriates. Workgroup coordinator Lt Col Hamid Hamoud Al Khalidi, Director of the Kuwait CEID, stressed on the successful experience of Qatar, Bahrain and Dubai in the field of exchanging fingerprints and security information electronically among them.

Al Khaldi expressed his gratitude to the Minister of State for Interior H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani and Staff Major Gen Saad bin Jassim Al Khulaifi, Director General of Public Security for hosting the important. The recommendations made by the workgroup during the meeting will be put for discussion in the agenda of the meeting of the directors generals of the investigation and criminal search departments in the GCC countries which will be held next April in Oman, said Lt Col Al Khaldi.
