DOHA: Local professionals have completed a five-day programme of comprehensive tuition in effective dispute resolution, where the 13 participants were trained in the skills required for the effective mediation of commercial disputes. The majority of participants were Qatari residents, and included representatives from the legal profession, business, the Courts and Qatar University.

The training sessions were administered jointly by the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) Court and the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) and participants were assessed for CEDR Mediator Accreditation, widely recognised as an international standard of excellence. This is the second such course that has been run in Qatar, and more are planned for later in the year.

Already well established in many leading jurisidictions, mediation is expected to become an increasingly popular method of resolving disputes as an alternative to litigation in the Gulf. It works by bringing parties together to try to achieve a negotiated settlement of their disputes, working with the assistance of a trained and neutral mediator.

Robert Musgrove, CEO of the Court said “It is the vision of the leaders of this country for Qatar to be an international centre of excellence for dispute resolution. The QFC Court provides much more than litigation services and we are developing a specialised ADR (alternative dispute resolution) Centre catering for mediations and arbitrations.   THE PENINSULA
