Korean firms offer Intelligent Transport System Saturday, 30 April 2011 02:17

DOHA: Korean IT firms have offered government bodies in Qatar state-of-the-art Intelligent Transport System (ITS) which will help a lot in improving the country’s transport industry now that it is bent developing infrastructure for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022.

The ITS, an advanced transport technology considered one of the best in the world and has became part of daily lives among Koreans, were presented on Wednesday by Korean experts and executives before officials and representatives of local government bodies during the Korea-Qatar ITS Road Show 2011 at Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Korean Ambassador to Qatar Chang See-jeong said their country through ITS had applied advanced IT technologies to the transportation management and the information systems on highways and other means of transportation infrastructure.

“I believe ITS should be part of upgraded future Qatar,” Chang said in his speech at the opening programme underscoring the necessity of such technology in transportation as integral part of the major infrastructure projects for the World Cup.

During the seminar, a representative from Korea’s Ministry of Land Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM) provided an overview of the current ITS status in their country while experts from different IT transport companies introduced the various state-of-the-art ITS technologies that had made life easier for the people in Korea.

Attending the session were representatives and officials from Ministry of Municipality and Urban Affairs, Ashghal and the police department where they were briefed in exploring opportunities for cooperation in the ITS technology in Qatar.

At the sidelines of the seminar, Hung Giyang, an executive from a leading Korean IT firm POSCO, explained to reporters the Light Railroad System and Personal Repeat Transit which they developed to make it more convenient and accessible to a large number of public commuters.

“If all these could be installed in Qatar, it could be one of the most advanced countries,” Giyang said.

Another expert, Eddie Kim from LS Cable, presented two technologies—Tunnel Traffic Management System and Urban Traffic Information System – which has become a part of very convenient transport information systems in Korea using the most advanced Information and Communication Technology.
