DOHA: Al Jazeera Media Network will launch a new dedicated sports news channel next month. Its technical and editorial teams are working round the clock to launch Al Jazeera Sports News on Tuesday, November 1, at 6pm.
The launch of this first-of-a-kind channel in the region coincides with the 15th anniversary of Al Jazeera.
The sports news channel will broadcast hourly news bulletins and 20 sports news programmes that will cover various sports on Nilesat (frequency 12245 vertical).
The news programmes will cover all major international tournaments and sports events, especially those exclusive to Al Jazeera Sports, such as the Spanish, Italian, French and other European football leagues. The channel will also feature weekly programmes presenting news about popular sports like basketball, athletics, tennis and motor sports.
The Director General of Al Jazeera Media Network, Sheikh Ahmad bin Jassim Al Thani, accompanied by Nasser Al Khlaifi, manager of Al Jazeera Sports, Mohammad Ammour, manager of Al Jazeera Sports News channel, and a number of Al Jazeera staff toured the premises of the new channel and saw the preparations for the launch of the channel.
Al Khlaifi briefed Sheikh Ahmad bin Jassim about the nature of the new channel’s work and the ongoing preparations. The director general said the necessary resources had been provided to guarantee a strong launch for the first Arabic sports news channel.
Arab sports news will have a prominent presence in the new channel — two programmes will be dedicated to covering major sports events in the Middle East and North Africa region. The channel will also follow general and economic sports news in the press and will provide comprehensive coverage of events that are not transmitted live through a five-hour programme broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays.
The channel will feature a variety morning show and a daily talk show that will include in-depth discussions. At the end of the day all the news broadcast will be summarised in an hour-long programme called “Today’s Harvest”.
