DOHA: The Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani yesterday formally opened the Cuban Hospital in Dukhan City. The 75-bed hospital is a joint venture between Qatar and Cuba.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Cuban Health Minister Dr Roberto Morales Ojeda, ministers and senior government officials.
A documentary film on the hospital was shown at the ceremony. The Emir later unveiled the memorial plaque marking the official opening of the hospital and then toured its various sections. The Emir also attended a luncheon banquet hosted on the occasion.
The state-of-the-art hospital was built and equipped by Qatar while the Cuban government provided more than 200 highly qualified medical professionals including doctors, nurses and specialists in the fields of rehabilitation, dentistry, pathology, biomedicine and radiology.

“The Cuban hospital is a modern facility which has not only been designed to meet the present population and workforce requirements, but it has the possibility of expanding to provide more services to greater numbers of people in future. Hence, it represents a focal point to promote the integration of the medical care with the other activities of prevention and health education to people in the neighboring western areas of Qatar,” said a statement issued by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH).
The hospital’s out-patient clinics were opened in mid 2011 providing laboratory, radiology and pharmacy services to patients taken on a referral basis.
The hospital provides secondary and tertiary care to people in the west of the country including Dukhan, Um Bab, Al Jemailiya and Al Shahaniyah. The initial services included specialist clinics for paediatric, endocrinology, internal medicine, urology, cardiology, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, gynaecology, and rehabilitation medicine.
Dental, physiotherapy, CT and MRI facilities, inpatients wards, operating theatre and emergency department have been added in a phased manner.
The hospital, with its advanced facilities and services is capable of providing specialty care to people from all over the country on a prior appointment basis. The Peninsula
