DOHA: Today is the last day of registration for the Al Qalil Hunting Championship - the first ever competition of its kind to be held in the Arab region, organisers announced yesterday.
Khalid bin Mohammad Mubarak Al Ali Al Maadheed, chairman of Al Qalil Hunting Championship organising committee, said several teams have already officially registered for the competition.
“Many people like hunting as a hobby therefore many are already excited and looking forward to the start of the competition,” said Al Maadheed.
Regarding the preparations for the championships, he said already finished yesterday the identification of the borders of the areas for hunting, which include the Al Qalil and Al Areeq areas, located south of Qatar.
A meeting is scheduled be held for the leaders of the participating teams to disclose the schedule of each team and detail the mechanics for the championship and for further inquiries teams may have.
Asked about the meaning of the term Al Qalil, Al Maadheed said in Bedouin language it means an elevated place which contains lots of rocks and sitting on top of these rocks offers a magnificent view of the horizon and enables the person to see long distance.
Atta Mohammad Ibrahim, member of Al Qalil championship organizing committee, said the championship was conceived out of the need to revitalize this hunting as an important aspect of Qatari heritage because the State supports the idea of promoting heritage.
“Because the championship will utilise traditional methods, the competition will provide participants a rare chance of living the past in the present,” said Ibrahim, adding the championship will also effectively promote awareness among the present generation on this Arab heritage since the event will be held in a real hunting environment.
Mohammad Saad Al Kubaisi, committee member said the first three days of registration witnessed great turnout.
“A huge number of people wanted to watch the championship and still more have registered in the competitions and we received lots of inquiries,” said Al Kubaisi.
For those who still want to register for the championship, they must present copies of their Qatari ID, photos and medical exam certificate from any certified medical centre to prove his fitness for the contest.
