Doha: Qatar’s most successful national team, men’s handball squad, will be in the spotlight at the Sport Zone, in the second edition of the prestigious initiative National Sport Day on February 12.
The members of the squad, who recently represented the country at the World Championships in Spain, will reveal to youngsters the secrets of the sport in a two one-hour sessions between 9am and 10am and 7pm and 8pm.
Young followers of handball will have the chance to practise in mini-handball courts and add to excitement.
Organisers are planning to introduce a knock-out tournament provided more than eight teams register.
Two of the mega-sites, West Bay Sport Zone and Corniche, are shaping up to welcome citizens who will join all-day celebrations across the country. All activities will last until February 16.
Apart from athletics, basketball 3X3, table tennis and gymnastics programmes announced recently, four more popular sports activities have been finalised.
A few weeks after the Doha ATP Men’s tournament and in parallel with the WTA Women’s Tournament at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex, kids will have the chance to imitate their icons’ smashes, forehands and backhands at four mini-tennis courts that will soon be placed at the Sport Zone.
Shooting, the sport which made Qataris proud after Nasser Al Attiyah’s bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, is attracting more and more fans.
In association with the National Shooting & Archery Federation, all those interested to check their shooting accuracy will have a try-out at a special tent.
Laser guns will be installed and will dare ambitious shooters to hit targets.
The venue will stay open from 9am to 9pm, with national team experts’ performances between 11am and noon and 6pm and 7pm.
Power sport weightlifting will not be missing from the programme at the Sport Zone.
Although most people believe that success in weightlifting is connected to extreme strength, national team coaches and athletes will demonstrate people between 11am and noon and 7pm and 8pm that other capacities such as agility, speed and perfect technique equally contribute to building a notable weightlifting athlete.
