I will do everything I can in my position to convince the Greeks to choose to stay in the euro zone and everything to convince Europeans....Fuelling price spiral Monday, 24 January 2011 03:17
We had to change yesterday's page one lead story at the eleventh hour after receiving the ‘breaking news’ that Woqod was increasing its fuel prices from
January 23.
We were surprised that the time gap between the announcement and implementation of such an important decision was not even 24 hours and it was effected on a weekend!
Here we raise the question that begs an answer: Where are our consumer rights?
By implementing the fuel price increase in less than 24 hours, Woqod showed little respect for the basic rights of the consumer.
If you take the legal perspective, any business agreement or contract has a grace period of at least 1 month before the implementation of any new decision as standard practice. Each party is expected to inform or give notice to the other party when it wants to change or terminate a particular contract before implementing the actual change or termination.
Some people may think that the price increase is negligible. But an increase in the price of fuel usually has a chain effect on the price of other commodities in the market. Since there was an increase of around 25 percent to 100 percent in the price of fuel, this will surely affect the price of transportation, which in turn will increase the price of basic goods and thus increase the price of services.
We are all affected by this. We are not concerned with the quantum of increase. What we are concerned about though is the way such an increase was implemented without giving enough notice to the public.
In democratic societies, any major decision, or implementation of any major decision, will have to go through a process and will have to be approved by a group of people that represents the interests of the majority.
During the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and the Qatar Businessmen’s Association last year, he had warned private businessmen against creating monopolies and jacking up prices.
Woqod is a semi-government company. If Woqod does not follow what the Prime Minister of the country said last year, what does that imply? Does it mean that there are different standards for government-run and privately owned businesses?
We hope to hear the voices of the Advisory Council, the Central Municipal Council and the Qatar Chamber of Commerce addressing the issue. We hope that they will discuss the issue and provide possible solutions. When many countries in the Arab world are up in arms over the increase in prices, Woqod’s decision to increase fuel prices will not reflect positively on Qatar. This will not be a good reflection on how decisions are taken in Qatar, either. The Peninsula

All Pakistanis windup and go back thier home land Pakistan and no any visa to be issued for Pakistani.
Thanks
It is make a rule that all Pakistanis from middle east wind up and go back their homeland Pakistan along with embassies and consulates with in one month. There should be ban of vist, work and permanet visas for all Pakistanis due to terreriest, currepted and criminal mindes, because all Pakistanis are robbers and thieives and "Kulish Bakistan Harami", therefore all A TO Z Pakistanis go back to theier home land and no any trade with them.
Thanks
I totally agree with this...if this continues then NO PERSON will regret the 2022 bid contract taken away from qatar!
It is a prestige to be the one to host the Qatar 2022 bid but does that mean that the people living here have to suffer all this?...
There are many questions rising in minds of the middle-income or say low-income people through the price rise of not only fuel..but also the basic commodities...who is responsible for this?..who will answer these questions?..
Last but not the least...Even if the govt. is planning to rise the prices of the basic needs i think they better need to raise incomes of the people!
Have you ever tried taking faulty good back to stores, even larger ones such as Carrefour, where you are all but told to go away or are called a thief / troublemaker for wanting to exercise basic consumer rights.
I am not surprised that prices are being increased, there is the 2022 World Cup to pay for and also coupled with the gross over exaggeration of oil & gas reserves that the middle east has made in the last decade.
There are obvious darker reasons why these economies are rushing to diversify. The genie is out of the bottle now and you can't put it back. The mists that have blanketed the mysterious middle east are lifting.
AFC Cup is on going and the eyes of the world is on us;
If this trend continous, I will NOT be surprise if the awarded 2022 World Cup will be taken from us. In view, that some sectors can singly manipulate such BIG DICISION.
You say you are not quantity of the increase but rather the method of the increase. I think you and I are alhamdolillah in a bracket where the amount of increase is just annoying, but I suggest that we are part of the 500,000. The remaining 1.5million in Qatar this means a significant impact on the amount of household goods and food items people can buy. I am not sure what the cause is, but surely if we work together we can find a beatuiful solution.
When I moved to the US, the prices was $0.65/gallon, when I left it was more than $2.65/gallon. When I moved to Qatar it was QR0.65/liter. Today it is more. Qatar is alhamdolillah a blessing for me and my family and it is our pleasure to be here. I hope we can come up with some creative solutions to help those whose food purchasing budget will be affected by the domino effect of all the stacked increases. Inshallah God guide and protect all those that live in Qatar.
