Doha: Qatar University’s (QU) Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (DBES) recently marked Qatar National Environment Day 2021 under the theme ‘Environmental-friendly solutions: Green technology.’

The celebration, which included a series of events and activities, was attended by President of Qatar University Dr. Hassan Rashid Al Derham, students, and faculty members.

Other officials in attendance included QU’s Vice-President for Student Affairs, Dr. Iman Mostafawi, Prof. Ibrahim AlKaabi, Acting Dean of College of Arts and Sciences QU, Dr. Mohammed Abu-Dieyeh, Associate Professor and Acting Head at Department of Biological and Environmental QU and Dr. Mohammad Al Ghouti, Associate professor and program coordinator at DBES.

In his opening speech, Dr. Al-Derham said, “Environment is one of the four pillars of Qatar national vision 2030, and Qatar marks World Environment Day on February 26 every year. DBES marks this event annually to raise awareness about the importance of our environment among Qatar’s youth.”

“This event is also a part of Qatar’s long-term commitment to promoting environmental conservation and sustainability for the benefit of society.”
Dr. Mohammed Abu-Dieyeh stressed the importance of this day.

This year world environment day was celebrated in collaboration with Naas Agricultural Consulting & Green House Co in Qatar, Environment and Sustainability Section, the Facilities and General services department at QU, and the Public Parks Department at the  Ministry of Municipality and Environment.

This year, the organising committee decided to hold two student competitions, including the logon of Qatar National Environment Day and the “Environmental article” competition.

These two competitions are open to bachelor’s and postgraduate students at the College of Arts and Science at Qatar University.

These two topics allow students to present their writing skills on environmental topics and design efficiency.

The idea of the two precedents of Qatar National Environment Day in Qatar 2021 revolves around the vision and mission of the Department of Biological and Environmental to promote environmentally friendly solutions: green technology.

The department will also continue cooperating with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to plan several joint activities and campaigns related to Qatar’s Million Tree Planting Initiative.

The department will also urge postgraduate students to write research proposals for the success of this initiative.

The campaign to plant 1 million trees in the country means increasing biodiversity, reducing dust air pollution, reducing carbon emissions, and reducing soil contamination with hydrocarbons and toxic heavy metals. This is in addition to the positive psychological impact that trees have on human health and life.
