Doha: Minister of State for Energy Affairs and Chairman and Managing Director of Industries Qatar (IQ) H E Saad Sherida Al Kaabi has appointed Abdulrahman Ali Al Abdulla as the new Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Steel starting from January 1, 2021. 

Al Abdulla holds a Bachelor degree in Science and Business Administration (major in Marketing) from University of Denver Colorado, USA in 1992. 

He brings a wealth of experience, cumulated over more than 28 years of services in Qatar Petroleum (QP) and QP affiliates.

He has also been appointed in multiple capacities with his huge expertise in local and international marketing, selling, and distribution of Chemical, Petrochemical and Steel products. 

Before assuming his new role in Qatar Steel, Al Abdulla was appointed by the Minister of Energy and Industry as Project Director to establish Qatar Chemical and Petrochemical Marketing and Distribution Company (Muntajat) in 2012, which included coordinating on all commercial and legal matters (Qatar and international), and then as Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Director of Muntajat in 2012. In November 2020, he was appointed as the Chairman of Muntajat.

Al Abdulla has exerted major roles and involvement in commercial, marketing and strategy for production of QAPCO (LDPE), Qatofin (LLDPE), QVC (EDC, VCM and caustic soda), QChem polymer and Qatar Steel production; and Organic and progressive growth in revenues and quantities to $8bn and 16MMT (2019) as a result of leading multiple strategies.

His career started with Qatar Petroleum in 1992 until 1999. He then devoted a short span of time in QAFAC as Commercial and Shipping Manager, where the Commercial and Shipping Department was established and managed wherein its strategy was set for the company’s 1.6MMT per annum MTBE and Methanol production.

Later, he became QAPCO Chief Executive Officer, Global Marketing Network in 2000 and then Group Manager, Commercial and Marketing in 2005, wherein the Marketing Department was established and furnished with global marketing network and logistic services (warehouses) to serve over 3,000 customers in over 130 countries.

Al Abdulla’s multiple roles in various organisations at varying levels has given him invaluable direction to spearhead business. Consistent with his commitment to contribute to the community and to the business sector in Qatar, he is serving as Board member of Qatar Academy (Al Wakra) as his social responsibility and an active member of the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association (GPCA) on various committees.
