Doha: Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie affirmed that Qatar, under the wise leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has attached great importance to the environment and sustainable development.
The Minister said that preparations are being made to study green growth opportunities in preparation for the development of a national strategy for green growth for the State of Qatar, taking into account sustainable development, in cooperation with the Global Green Growth Institute via its office in Doha.
In his speech on the occasion of the World Environment Day, which falls on June 5 every year, the Minister expressed Qatar’s pleasure to participate in the celebration of the 2021 World Environment Day under the theme ‘Ecosystem Restoration’, which comes within the context of the urgent need to take ambitious measures to develop a clear framework for preserving ecosystems and environmental diversity in the world in a way that contributes to achieving a sustainable environment for future generations.
He explained that the Ministry interest in the 2021 World Environment Day comes as an affirmation of the importance of the environments important role in providing a healthy life for everyone living in Qatar.
The Minister pointed out that the Ministry has undertaken, at the national level, many plans and strategies that focus on preserving the Qatari land, protecting endangered trees, planting many Qatari wild trees, and working to multiply endangered animals such as the Arabian Oryx and Re’em, as well as preserving aquatic ecosystems through a national network for continuous monitoring of the state of the marine environment, and programs to examine the quality of soil and coastal waters in the country by collecting samples at different depths, stressing that these efforts aim to achieve a quantum leap in the country’s environmental systems in its various forms.
He explained that Qatar has attached great importance to climate change, by ratifying the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, to contribute to doing what is necessary to reduce the effects of climate change with the countries of the whole world.
The Minister called on all civil society organisations and all segments of society to join efforts to preserve the ecosystems in the Qatari environment, as it is part of the natural heritage and legacy for future generations.
