Doha: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has organized several awareness activities on the occasion of the ‘International Plastic Bag Free Day,’ which falls on July 3 of each year to eliminate the use of single-use plastic bags in the world.

LuLu Hypermarket, Al Meera, Carrefour, and Talabat participated in the event in the presence of a number of the MME officials and other participating parties.

The event included educating the public, including visitors to malls, by distributing educational publications and environmentally friendly bags.

About 100,000 bags were distributed in Carrefour, 350 bags in LuLu Hypermarket, and 6,000 bags from Talabat.

Several awareness activities were also organized on social networking sites to raise awareness among the public about the importance of using reusable bags and reducing single-use plastic bags that pollute the environment. Educational videos were also shown in all participating branches and placing advertisements at the entrances of the malls, on stickers, and shopping trolleys.

Hassan Nasr Al Nasr, Assistant Director of Waste Recycling and Treatment Department of the MME, said that organizing such events aims to educate the public about the best ways to use environmentally friendly bags and their benefits for all, and the need to stop using plastic bags. For his part, the Lulu Hypermarket representative thanked the Ministry for organizing such awareness events to reduce plastic bags on the International Plastic Bag Free Day.

He indicated that this event aims to encourage customers to use environmentally friendly bags instead of plastic bags.

“Today, we gave customers environmentally friendly bags in three branches of Lulu Hypermarket, and we also encourage customers to continue using these bags and reduce plastic and its damages,” he said.

While, the Al Meera representative stated: “We at Al Meera look forward to building a future more sustainable by taking the lead in establishing environmentally friendly practices and policies through various initiatives for recycling plastic bottles.”
